WhatsApp Scam Alert

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) has been seeing a significant upward trend related to recent WhatsApp scams in which scammers use the code verification method to trick victims into providing information that compromises their accounts.

Here's how it typically works:

Receiving an Unexpected Code: Victims receive a verification code via SMS that they did not request. This code is part of the two-step verification process used by WhatsApp to secure accounts.

Scammer Manipulation: Scammers often contact the victim, claiming to be from WhatsApp or a trusted source, family, or friend, and ask for the verification code. They may use social engineering tactics to create a sense of urgency or fear.

Account Takeover: Once the victim provides the code, the scammer gains access to the victim's WhatsApp account. This allows them to impersonate the victim, access personal information, and potentially scam the victim's contacts.

Consequences for Victims:

  • Loss of control over their WhatsApp account.
  • Potential financial loss if scammers solicit money from their contacts.
  • Compromised personal information that can lead to further scams.

CARICOM IMPACS therefore urges vigilance when receiving WhatsApp messages from unknown contacts.
