CARICOM IMPACS and RSS-TOCTF deliver crime scene management training
07 June 2024
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) in collaboration with the Regional Security System (RSS) - Transnational Organised Crime Task Force (TOCTF) is currently delivering a comprehensive five-day, in-person training program on Crime Scene Management in St. Kitts and Nevis.
The training, which is being held from 3 – 7 June 2024, aims to enhance the competence, capability, and performance of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) in securing, preserving, examining, and managing crime scenes.
Twenty-five officers from the St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force are in attendance at the training, which is restricted to active operational police officers who are expected to encounter crime scenes during their duties.
Lt. Col. Michael Jones, Executive Director, CARICOM IMPACS, explained that with the recent surge in firearm-related criminal activities across the Eastern Caribbean, which resulted in the unfortunate loss of life and community upheaval, it has become increasingly apparent that a sustained effort in training LEAs is imperative.
He added that continuous LEA training not only serves to bolster their capabilities but also plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of forensic practices and evidence handling within the region.
“In line with our holistic approach to combatting gun-related offenses, it is crucial not only to leverage initiatives such as the CARICOM Gun Crime Intelligence Unit (CCGIU) but also to prioritise the professional development of our law enforcement personnel as fundamental pillars of our overarching crime and security strategy,” Lt. Col. Jones said.
The training includes a blend of classroom sessions and practical scenario exercises, integrating role-playing elements to maximise learning outcomes.
