GETTING SMART ON DIGITAL CURRENCIES AND DIGITAL ASSETS IN THE CARIBBEAN

The goal of this project is to analyze and map digital currencies and assets inclusive of cryptocurrencies to better understand how these mechanisms relate to and/or facilitate transnational organized crime, including corruption.
OBJECTIVES
- Convert anecdotal evidence of digital currency and digital assets used to facilitate crime into a detailed visual and analytical picture to be shared with Member States and used to inform potential programmatic and legislative interventions.
- Determine the legal and regulatory improvements needed to improve the oversight, detection, regulation, and enforcement response to criminal activity and use through analysis of interventions and recommendations
- Share findings and results with stakeholders with the aim of improving/strengthening current systems.
OUTPUTS/RESULTS
- Listing and Mapping of digital currencies and assets being used in the Caribbean including information on how they are being used and by whom
- Report on Digital Currency and Asset environment in the Caribbean which explores the link between DCAs and criminal activity and legislative environment
- Recommendations for the various actors in the sector to address oversight, regulation, legal and policy issues surrounding the use of DCAs as well as their enforcement response to related criminal activity
- Online Dashboard to present map flows of Digital Currencies and Assets in the Caribbean region as well the key findings of the study
- Sensitisation programme to highlight the main findings of the study to key stakeholders in the sector
