Stay Cybersecure: Fake Investment Websites
17 January 2025
Notification to CARICOM Member States regarding fake investment websites
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) advises that fake investment websites are becoming increasingly widespread across the Region.
These sites are fraudulent online platforms designed to deceive individuals into investing money in non-existent or illegitimate ventures within and outside the Region. They often mimic legitimate financial institutions, using convincing graphics and false credentials to lure victims. Once funds are transferred, the scammers disappear, leaving investors with significant financial losses.
Common signs of fake investment websites:
- Guaranteed high returns: Promises of "quick" and "risk-free" profits.
- Pressure tactics: Urgent deadlines to invest or limited time offers.
- Unverified licensing: No proof of regulation by financial authorities.
- Poor website design: Broken links, grammatical errors, and low-quality images.
- Untraceable contact information: No physical address or only online chat support.
How to stay safe:
- Research the company: Verify the company's registration and reviews.
- Check URLs carefully: Look for slight spelling changes in web addresses.
- Avoid unsolicited offers: Be wary of unexpected emails, messages or ads.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Stay Alert. Stay Safe.
