The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) recently hosted a delegation from the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) for an exploratory meeting aimed at laying the foundation for strategic collaboration in regional cyber security, cybercrime mitigation and threat intelligence sharing.

The meeting, which took place from 31 August to 4 September 2026, focused on identifying common priorities and evaluating technical frameworks to build cyber resilience across CARICOM Member States. The delegation held meetings with stakeholders in both Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Discussions highlighted key focus areas, including capacity-building initiatives, dynamic incident response, joint threat intelligence exchange and practical mechanisms to combat emerging cyber threats such as ransomware targeting regional infrastructure.

Lt. Col. Michael Jones, Executive Director, CARICOM IMPACS, noted that as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated and boundaryless, regional security frameworks must evolve through proactive, high-level global partnerships.

"This engagement with KISA represents a critical step towards evaluating advanced cyber security models and leveraging international expertise to better safeguard the Caribbean’s digital landscape”, he added.

Representatives from KISA expressed a strong commitment to exploring joint opportunities under broader bilateral and technical cooperation initiatives. Aligning KISA’s extensive experience in critical infrastructure protection and national incident response with CARICOM IMPACS’ regional mandate, both organisations aim to identify potential operational programmes and joint capacity-building initiatives that are mutually beneficial.

The discussions concluded with an agreement to refine joint objectives, map out technical needs and evaluate a structured plan for potential future cooperation.
